Flood Report for District 25-C

Flood Update February 7, 2008

The Floods on the Tippecanoe River have been declared a Federal Disaster Area by President Bush, after application was filed by Governor Daniels last week. There is action pending to expand the scope of the area due to the extended flooding in the Wabash Valley.

With warm temperatures and heavy rain melting existing snow on the ground, the saying "here we go again" fits like a painful glove! After two days of heavy fog and rain, the Norway and Oakdale dams are once again running at flood capacity of 22,000 cubic feet a second. This has brought donwstream levels on the Tippecanoe back to within a few feet of last month.

The larger problem is that the flooding now extends throughout the Wabash River as well. Yesterday, the Wabash at Lafayette was at 22 feet, 11 over flood stage, and is predicted to crest at 23+. This will spare the West Lafayette levee area, but flood all lowlying housing again.

Many houses that were flooded last month on the Tippecanoe and had been partially repaired are now flooded again. Red Cross re-opened their shelter at Delphi's First Presbyterian Church last night after closing it the day before.

DG Ron Spivey is working with Emergency Services Chair PDG Wanda Wentland to re-open our LCIF grant application and dispense additional food vouchers today. More news on this as it becomes available. We are not collecting clothing or housewares at this time.

The flood is still with us and many of our neighbors.

Take a look.

The pictures do not begin to describe the personal devastation caused by a flood.  If you have replacements for some of the items shown in the pictures, please contact your District Governor, the Red Cross, or another relief agency.  Your gesture will be most appreciated.

As the damage assessments from Emergency Management Departments and the Red Cross are being complied, the flood's scope is now better defined. Current estimates are:

738 homes affected by flooding
165 are considered total losses. (4' or more water inside house)
285 homes have major damage
288 homes have minor damage
109 houses are still not accessible by land.

Red Cross and Emergency Management expect a federal Disaster Area declaration soon.
Delphi, Battleground, Monon, and Monticello clubs are still dispensing food vouchers and helping our neighbors shovel out their homes' contents. Carroll County Highway Department started debris pickups yesterday as announced.

Many of you have wondered about Lions in flooded areas of District 25-C.  Here is the latest report.  We, the District, received a $10,000 relief grant from LCIF for this effort.  PDG Billy Chastain

Just a note to let you know what the Battle Ground Lions Club has been doing with the Food Vouchers.  The Red Cross opened up a pickup point in the Battle Ground Lions Building on Monday, January 14, 2008.  They were giving out Clean Up Kits and cases of water.  The Battle Ground Lions Club was passing out the Food Vouchers for Wallmanns Quality Foods in Delphi, IN.  I had also contacted Mary Lou Donuts and they have furnished us with donuts to give to the flood victims.  The BG Lions has coffee, hot chocolate, milk, and soda available for them while in picking up their kits.  We give them a dozen donuts to take with them if they want them.  In the first two days we have had 17 households come in.  Some have been from Horseshoe Bend and Tecumseh Bend, Goldsberry Road, and Morning Side Lane.  I know the Horsehoe Bend and Tecushe Bend are in Carroll County but we were not going to make them run around to different locations.  I'm not sure how or where the food vouchers are being given out in Carroll and White County.  If you have any further information please let me know.  The way I understand it the locations in Battle Ground Lions Club will be open through Sunday, Janauary 20, at least.

Ed Geisler, President, Battle Ground Lions Club

White County is being served by Monon and Monticello LC's, while the Carroll County Distribution is being handled by Delphi LC. There will be some overlap as the Battle Ground LC is at the very northern part of Tippecanoe County and on the main road to Horseshoe and Tecumseh Bend areas in Carroll County. So far, no problems.  I'll get more info and get back to you today. Red Cross is doing mass feeding from their trucks, distributing cleanup materials and other comfort kits.  Overall, its a very good and coordinated response by the standards of what i have witnessed in the past. The bad news is that it's COLD. But it does keep the stink and mold down!  VDG Charlie Short
